To put it simply, Speak Up NYC was created was so students could learn how to public speak and debate. But this is the bare minimum. Speak Up NYC wants to foster an environment that creates civic-minded leaders.

Learning new skills is important but it is even more important to apply those skills to make a difference. We strongly encourage SUNYC students to apply their public speaking and debate skills to the real world. This may look like reaching out to local legislators and petitioning for or against a bill you have strong beliefs about. Ultimately, we believe that students should be active in their respective communities. Thus, Speak Up NYC hosts virtual “Creating Change” seminars every month.
